I’d always dreamed of visiting Switzerland–and as we all know, sometimes when you make dreams like these happen there’s a teeny-tiny bit of disappointment. But it was far from that way for me!

Interlaken was the midpoint of my exploration of Switzerland, since I’d already spent a few days in Lugano. I arrived at the Interlaken Os Train Station around noon, and was happy to find my hotel, the Lindner Grand Hotel Beau Rivage, was just a block away.

The walk was a lot slower than it should have been, though, since there was so much to see. Nestled between the Alps, the name Interlaken truly means “between the lakes.” In one direction, the Jungfraujoch, the highest point in Europe rose above me, while in the other, the Harderbahn Funicular climbed up and down the mountains.

As I’d surmised, Interlaken was a grown-up’s outdoor playground, and the Lindner Hotel was one of its traditional GrandeDames!

Check-in to the Lindner went as easily as expected from a five-star hotel. Staff were friendly and spoke English fluently–mind you, I’d already discovered that every Swiss child learned several languages in school, so everyone I met seemed able to switch back and forth between languages.

My room was exceedingly comfortable. I particularly loved the large patio-door style windows, which I could open to let the cool mountain breeze drift in while I slept. It did take me awhile to get the windows figured out though, as there’s a specific method to getting them opened and I’d never seen anything similar in North America.

The first thing on my afternoon agenda was taking a ride on the nearby Harderbahn Funicular, so I had a light lunch at the hotel before walking over–delicious food, an outdoor patio, great service–I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

In all, I spent three nights at the Lindner and had excellent service throughout. The breakfast buffet, part of the package, offered an excellent variety from fruit to pastries to omelettes. It was a great way to start each day’s adventures in Interlaken.

I didn’t get time to take advantage of some of the Lindner’s extra amenities, such as the sauna, pool, steam room, or massages, but maybe next time…

Enjoy this YouTube video of all the amazing things you’ll see while you’re enjoying your stay at the Lindner.
