There’s nothing quite like getting up in the morning to see the sun glinting off a northern Saskatchewan lake out your window–even if that lake is covered with snow!

The quiet little community of Green Lake is among Saskatchewan’s oldest, having been established as a wintering post by the North West Company back in 1782.

Its prime winter location made it important to the fur trade, since it connected overland trails with the Churchill River. Of course all that led to a few disputes between the two fur trade moguls, the Hudson Bay Company and the North West Company.

The strong traditions of the community were apparent as the school where I was volunteering in the library during my visit was over 110 years old!

While I didn’t get a lot of time to explore the remainder of the community, I did make sure I took a noon hour walk each day along the shores of Green River that’s almost the back schoolyard. And, of course, I had to take a late afternoon walk fack at the Green Lake Lodge and cabins that are just on the outskirts of town.

Since it was off season, I stayed at the Green Lake Lodge Bed & Breakfast, in the lower level of Bryan & Linda Jensrud’s home and office, where I was able to spread out, bask in the warmth of the wood-burning stove, gaze out at the lake, and well, just generally make myself as comfortable as if I was at home!

The B & B has two bedrooms with a shared bath. Guests have a ton of living space, with the dining area, living room of leather sofas and chairs, along with a large tv and satellite.

I’ve stayed in other B & Bs where I felt awkward, but the owners of Green Lake Lodge both respected my privacy and were there when I wanted some company.

I must also admit that the very best part of staying at this B & B was Linda’s cooking! Seriously, I gained at least five pounds in my five days, eating three meals a day prepared by Linda. Breakfast of course, is always included, and Linda will prepare lunch (I took a bag lunch to school with me) and dinner.

The cabins, I learned while visiting with Bryan and Linda, open in the spring as soon as fishermen are ready to trade in their ice-fishing shacks for a boat on the lake. There are a variety of sizes and types of cabins to choose from, with photos available on the Lodge’s website at: http://www.greenlakelodge.ca/ They also have twenty beautiful campsites, some along the lake and with electricity, and some further into the trees, without electricity.

What Fish Can You Catch at Green Lake?

The best fishing on Green Lake is for one of northern Saskatchewan’s favorites, walleye. Green Lake is long and narrow (but up to 300 feet deep!), and those reporting in on the fishing forums indicate you might get your best walleye catch traveling a ways down its length.

Other good catches on Green Lake are pike and perch.
