If you head into the remote interior of Australia, you’ll be heading into “The Outback.” It’s a vast area that offers incredible opportunities for an adventure. Read on to discover eight of these great adventures in Australia’s Outback that are waiting for you.

1. Saddle Up in Kimberley

Find one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. While you’re here, how about replacing your vehicle with a horse? Imagine you’re a cowboy in the wild west, and start exploring the beautiful nature around Kimberley that ranges from canyons and Australian bush to white beaches. If you are a fan of a relaxing adventure and spending time in the sun, this can be a perfect way of enjoying your afternoon.

However, if you’d like an adventure in the saddle with a bit of twist, try a camel ride instead of horseback. The camel trains across Cable Beach are fun, whether you take them at sunset or first thing in the morning. Visitors have been enjoying these great adventures in Australia’s outback since the 1980s due to the dream of Abdul Casley.

2. Take a Staircase to the Moon

Once you’re in Cable Beach and Broome, you’ll find lots to do. This coastal town is a magnet for tourists because it has many amazing attractions. The top of the list, though, is a unique visual phenomenon called “staircase to the Moon.” It may not be an adventure per se, but it’ll be an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

The Moon shines over Roebuck Bay, and the ideal angle of tidal waves make the waves remind of staircases that can take you directly to the moon. When it’s a full moon, the locals organize markets with food stalls and other entertainment options.

3. Camp at Snowy Mountains

In mainland Australia, the Snowy Mountains are the highest mountain range. The highest point is Mount Kosciuszko, with its elevation of 2,228 metres. Four other peaks are also higher than 2,100 metres, which means that you’re in for real adventures in Australia’s Outback.

Your adventure can be as easy or challenging as you want. If you take the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, you’ll get spectacular views of Thredbo. In 15 minutes, you’ll travel nearly two kilometres and rise 560 vertical metres!

It’s truly exciting when the chairlift stops working, and you realize you walked kilometres until you reached your desired camping point. There are guides that will prepare everything, including the amazing dinner so that you can enjoy the fresh air and beautiful view from the Snowies.

4. Visit Coober Pedy and Sleep Underground

Did you know that locals here are amazing diggers? They decided to go underground during hot summers as it is an amazing way to escape from the heat — Coober Pedy is often over 110 degrees daily! Believe it or not, that’s why many residents of Coober Pedy chose to live underground.

Locals even established hotels that provide a unique opportunity for visitors to enjoy this otherworldly location. The town is quite far from Adelaide, which is why you should get a four-wheel drive vehicle to reach it. It’d be wise to visit the universal roof rack and choose a system that will let you take everything you need for a trip into the underworld of Coober Pedy.

Can’t imagine it? Watch Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome if you haven’t seen it, as the post-apocalyptic movie was filmed here in 1985.

5. Ride the Falls in Kimberley Coast

The tides in Talbot Bay and the Buccaneer Archipelago can go over ten metres in the summer. Now, imagine that much water finding its way through narrow gorges. There are two of those gorges near the Kimberley Coast, and the narrower one is six metres “wide.”

These rapids remind a lot of a horizontal waterfall, and riding them provides unique and thrilling adventures in Australia’s Outback. You’ll need a special boat equipped with a powerful engine, as well as a professional who knows how to navigate the gorges. Everything will start slowly while you’re enjoying the view, but you’ll feel the adrenaline rush when you get into the gorges with the tide pounding through them.

6. Choose Your Favourite Way to Enjoy a Katherine Gorge Adventure in Australia’s Outback

If you like kayaking, you probably won’t find a prettier place to visit in the Northern Territory than the Nitmiluk National Park. Once you find yourself there, head to the Katherine Gorge, which is a combo of 13 different gorges, and each of them is breathtaking.

You don’t have to stick to kayaking only. If you prefer hiking, there are many trails you can follow. Alternatively, you can find a helicopter that will take you into the air, and allow you to see the towering rock cliffs from above. However, keep in mind that only kayaks may get you to some tough to reach locations that may be perfect for camping.

7. See the Wildlife of South Australia While Driving a Straight Road

Now, you may be thinking that driving through a straight road is boring, but when you head via the Nullarbor Plain, you will realize why it’s a real adventure.

There are almost no trees in this entire plain, which is what the name “Nullarbor” means in Latin. However, you’ll encounter many animals such as emus, kangaroos, wombats, and wild camels. You can also explore caves, or enjoy watching whales from cliffs.

Additionally, you’ll get the chance to enjoy the longest golf course in the entire world. As you pass through a roadhouse or town, make sure to check for a hole. Oh, and did you know that you will enjoy more than 1,300 kilometres of the road if you follow the golf course?

8. Hike to Zebedee Springs in El Questro

If you want to experience a beautiful landscape while resting by the waterfall and hearing the birds sing, you should head to Zebedee Springs.

The trick is that you’ll have to find your way through the lush vegetation. There’s no need to worry because the entire trail has signs you use for navigation. Once you get to the dashing pools of water with palm trees around, you can relax and forget about anything that bothers you.

This is not the only relaxing retreat in the area, so make sure to look for other ones, too. Heads up – you’ll need to walk to reach each of them, which is why it’s smart to go in the morning.

The Bottom Line When It Comes to Great Adventures in Australia’s Outback

The Outback is a unique opportunity to explore nature, and experience moments that’ll turn to lifelong memories. Whether you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, you like following trails, or prefer to relax while enjoying beautiful landscapes, you’ll find something that fits your preference in this part of Australia. It’s up to you to choose your favourite destination, and prepare for an adventure of a lifetime!
