When it comes to architecture, durability is a crucial factor that ensures a building stands the test of time. Of course, the constructors of all these buildings, which survived during the time, did a great job. The world has witnessed several buildings that have stood for centuries, surviving natural disasters, wars, and other destructive events. Therefore, if you are interested to find out which are the most durable and historical buildings that you must see while traveling, read below!

1. The Hagia Sophia

Firstly, the Hagia Sophia is a former Byzantine church, later converted into a mosque and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. Built in AD 537, it’s one of the world’s most significant examples of Byzantine architecture.

The building has withstood multiple earthquakes, fires, and other disasters. Its structural durability is attributed to the innovative use of materials, including brick and mortar, iron clamps, and marble slabs.

2. The Stari Most Bridge

Moreover, another amazing building somewhere in Europe is the Stari Most Bridge is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most iconic landmarks.

The Stari Most Bridge was built in the 16th century by the Ottoman Empire, and it connected the two sides of the Neretva River in the city of Mostar. The bridge has survived multiple wars, including the Bosnian War in the 1990s when it was destroyed and later rebuilt. Its durability is attributed to its unique design, which features a single arch that distributes weight evenly, allowing it to withstand external forces.

3. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame

If you are traveling to France, you must visit the Cathedral of Notre Dame. The Cathedral of Notre Dame is a medieval Catholic cathedral located in Paris, France. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, it’s one of the world’s most renowned examples of Gothic architecture.

The Cathedral of Notre-Dame has faced several challenges, including damage during the French Revolution and a devastating fire in 2019. However, its structural durability is attributed to its use of innovative techniques, including flying buttresses, which distribute weight evenly, and the use of iron frames.

4. The Taipei 101 Tower

Last but not least, the Taipei 101 Tower is a skyscraper located in Taipei, Taiwan. It was completed in 2004 and held the title of the world’s tallest building until 2010.

The Taipei 101 tower’s durability is attributed to its innovative design, which incorporates an 18-foot tuned mass damper that counters the building’s sway during typhoons and earthquakes. Its steel-and-concrete structure also provides excellent resistance to wind and earthquakes.
